Around this time last year, I got the crazy idea to do something totally outside my comfort zone — organize a large-scale event, called the Millennial Money Meetup, to promote financial literacy in my community.
Well, I pulled the first Millennial Money Meetup off in September 2016 and it was a huge success.
To learn more about that event, you can read my full recap on the blog here.
How the Second Millennial Money Meetup Came About
That was more than 6 months ago now, so I knew it was time to host another one. So, when Meridian Credit Union approached me to sponsor my next event, I couldn’t resist!
Since this time of year is considered homebuying season, I thought it would be a fun idea to focus my second Millennial Money Meetup on what millennials need to know about homeownership.
As a relatively new homeowner myself, there was so much I didn’t know that I wish I did before buying my first place. So, I contacted a panel of guests with different expertise and personal experiences with homeownership and hosted my second event at a really cool venue in Toronto this May.
My Panel of Experts
Since buying a home is a such hot topic for millennials right now, probably because it seems like an impossibility in this crazy real estate market, I wanted to make sure that all attendees left having more clarity and confidence when it came to knowing what’s involved in buying a home of their own.
I wanted the panel to touch on not just homeownership, but also mortgages, property taxes, and finding a good realtor.
To do this, I reached out to four in-the-know experts who turned into my stellar line-up of speakers: Penelope Graham (Managing Editor, Zoocasa), Jelani Smith (Finance Blogger at Bay Street Blog), Heather O’Hare (Mortgage Specialist, Meridian Credit Union), and Lesli Gaynor (Realtor, GOCOSolutions).

Got a Money Question?
As a fun activity at all my meetups, I include a money question box for attendees to write into. This helps me gauge what people want to learn more about for future events and in general. If you have a money question you’d like me to know about it, leave it in the comments below!
